NPR Distribution, Managers of the Public Radio Satellite System

DACS—Direct Access Communications System

The DACS (Direct Access Communications System) is intended for timely, high-speed communication between various public telecommunication entities. DACS messages are sent via satellite to interconnected stations, and an archive of sent messages is available online for viewing by program providers and producers, NPR staff, and other public radio organizations. The most critical function of the DACS is to provide stations with timely program announcements and scheduling information. Operations of the DACS system will continue, along with ContentDepot messaging, until further notice.

Stations and producers equipped with computers can transmit messages via NPR Distribution directly to all other stations, to a specific station or individual, or to a designated network of interest, or sub-group of parties to whom the message applies. Stations in the interconnection system are equipped with personal computers to receive DACS messages. DACS software allows stations to sort and store these messages and to manage the routing of DACS traffic within the station.

In addition, stations and producers can read the DACS message archive and send DACS messages on the Internet or via a modem call to NPR Distribution.

PRSS Technical Support provides assistance for any DACS System users. Topics include:

  • account creation and maintenance for sending messages or reading the archive
  • creation and maintenance of networks of interest (DACS distribution lists)
  • troubleshooting problems with the Internet, modem, or Telnet connections
  • instructions for sending messages
  • help with the SOSS DACS Capture and DACS View applications

To obtain information on procedures and equipment for using the DACS, contact the PRSS Technical Support Desk at 800.971.SOSS [7677] or 202.513.2666 or via email at prsshelp@npr.org.
