PRSS® Forward

The Public Radio Satellite System® (PRSS®) has launched a system-wide project, which will run through 2013, to upgrade or replace certain hardware and software components of the system. The project will involve significant improvements to equipment provided to PRSS interconnected stations nationwide and to internal PRSS systems with funds provided by Congress through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

To ensure that stations across the country can take advantage of the latest file- and stream-delivery technologies for their programming, PRSS is pursuing a three-track program:

  • Replace streaming decoders and storage receivers at more than 400 interconnected stations nationwide
  • Ensure that the current Network Operations Center (NOC) technology is updated and current
  • Develop and build-out an entirely new NOC for NPR’s new headquarters in Washington, DC

Running parallel to these steps is a project to assess the reception antennas at the more than 400 PRSS satellite interconnected stations.

We appreciate the comments, suggestions and questions sent in by readers of the PRSS Forward newsletter. We have created an FAQ to provide information about the project, and we will continue to post new details on the FAQ page as we confirm them.
