Promotional Dos and Don'ts
You may want to employ such media tools as press releases and ads in public broadcasting periodicals when marketing your program. The Producer's Resource Guide is also available online.
When publicizing your program through other media, it is important to keep in mind that as an independent producer or distributor, you are not part of a particular network or program service. NPR Distribution manages the Public Radio Satellite System on behalf of all users, but placing a program on the satellite in no way implies an affiliation with NPR's programming or any of its other functions or services. Neither the satellite nor the system "belongs" to NPR, and its role as interconnection system operator is entirely distinct from its role as a program producer.
Therefore, non-NPR program suppliers should avoid references which imply the program is sponsored or produced by National Public Radio. To indicate in any way that your program is "from," "by," or "for" National Public Radio is an infringement of the trademarked logo owned and protected by NPR and a misrepresentation of the program's source.
On the other end of the pipeline, there is a common misconception among system newcomers that the satellite only serves NPR member stations. On the contrary, the receiving stations constitute a varied mix of programming and organizational memberships and affiliations (NPR, PRI, Pacifica, regional networks, etc.), as well as many stations which have no such affiliations. Each program source-whether a national network or single independent-controls the rights to the use of its programs, and it is in your interest to make clear that your program is available to the largest possible number of users.
Some examples of language to avoid in your materials:
"...distributed by NPR."
"...available to NPR affiliates."
"...distributed on the NPR satellite."
"...heard on NPR stations."
Some examples of language to use in your materials:
"...This program is distributed by John Smith on the Public Radio Satellite System. Also available on cassette tape from John Smith."
"...available on the Public Radio Satellite System to all interconnected stations."
"...distributed on the Public Radio Satellite System."
"...can be heard on public radio stations nationwide. Contact your local station for information."
