To distribute programming via the PRSS, program producers must register with NPR Distribution. This division coordinates the scheduling of facilities needed to accomplish live program feeds, and it maintains the ContentDepot web interface, which producers can use to upload file-based audio for automated distribution. Programs are distributed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Programs distributed over the Public Radio Satellite System come from NPR, Public Radio International (PRI), American Public Media, and more than 200 other radio producers and organizations. Formats include news, public affairs, drama, documentaries, classical music, jazz, and many others.

Individual programs and program series are variously priced by their producers. Many independently-produced programs are free to stations; others are available for a small fee. The ContentDepot contains program descriptions and information on pricing, availability, and usage restrictions for all satellite-distributed programs.
