On Tuesday, March 18, 2014, Oracle is expected to release a significant new Java 8 update. Java is used by the PRSS ContentDepot portal's episode upload application. Most producers are currently running Java 7 to upload to the ContentDepot.
PRSS has been testing and monitoring Java 8 in anticipation of the release by Oracle. We believe that Windows XP and Mac OS versions prior to 10.8.3 will not be supported by Java 8 and will continue to operate under Java 7.
** Producers using Windows XP and Mac OS versions older than 10.8.3 should not upgrade to Java 8 **.
Similarly, if you are using a Mac OS and Firefox, we'd recommend you defer on upgrading to Java 8 at this time, as our testing has indicated that this combination does not work with the Java upgrade.
Our understanding is that producers using later versions of Windows and Mac operating systems can continue to use Java 7 or optionally upgrade to Java 8.
If your computer is upgraded to Java 8, you will need to make a configuration change to your Java set-up to be able to upload to the ContentDepot. In the advanced settings for your Java Control Panel, under Advanced Security Settings, you will need to make sure that the options to use TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 are unchecked. Instructions are attached, and the PRSS Help Desk can provide more detailed assistance specific to your computer's operating system.

Again, these changes to the Java settings are only required if you choose to upgrade to Java 8. Upload will continue to work, without modification, if you remain on Java 7.
The PRSS will continue to monitor the progress of Java 8, and there are plans to make necessary modifications to ContentDepot to make the transition as seamless as possible once the final Java 8 version is released by Oracle.
