NPR Distribution, Managers of the Public Radio Satellite System

The ContentDepot® Roadmap

Because of its far-reaching scope, NPR Distribution is implementing the ContentDepot incrementally

PRSS ContentDepot Catalog
first release spring 2002

The web-based PRSS ContentDepot Catalog is the prototype for the interactive program website and asset management system at the core of ContentDepot. The ContentDepot asset management system stores programs and program elements in a centralized location. As the first release of the PRSS ContentDepot portal, the Catalog is the place for station program directors to find programs, program information, and other content elements. For producers, the Catalog allows them to manage and market their own programs—adding new ones, modifying existing ones, adding new audio samples and graphics.

Downlink Upgrades (ETRP)
2001-2004

NPR Distribution began laying the foundation for the ContentDepot by initiating a major overhaul of station satellite antenna systems. This work is required to prepare the station infrastructure for the ContentDepot and to provide access to satellite back-up in the event of a failure.

Enhanced Messaging (DACS)
summer 2002

Enhancements to the messaging system moved it to a more web-friendly platform and provided WebDACS users with increased search, archive, and filtering features.

Electronic File Submission
winter 2002

To streamline the delivery of programs, the System Technical Center (STC) began accepting delivery of audio via File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Producers capable of creating broadcast-ready audio files began submitting them electronically.

Redesigned PRSS.org Website
winter 2002

The PRSS website has been redesigned to make services and information easier to find. As the ContentDepot continues to evolve, PRSS.org is the portal through which services will be accessed. It will provide the unified interface for stations and producers to interact with the ContentDepot.

Enhanced Scheduling and Billing
fall 2003

A centralized scheduling application has been implemented that will better integrate with ContentDepot technologies and services.

IP Transmission Technology
anticipated winter 2006

In 2002, NPR Distribution engaged BBC Technology (BBCT) to empirically confirm the feasibility of IP over satellite as the core ContentDepot transmission technology for audio and file transmission. Latency, quality and reliability of service, and the availability of off-the-shelf components were evaluated within the context of NPR Distribution's standards.

File Transfer
anticipated winter 2006

In the IP-based ContentDepot system, stored programs will be transmitted over the satellite as IP files. These files will be downloaded by stations intact so they can be routed into the station's automation system.

Station Automation
anticipated winter 2006

Over the course of this time period, the various functions of station SOSS equipment and software will be replaced with receivers and systems for processing live and stored programs transmitted from the ContentDepot. Improved integration between the ContentDepot system and the stations' broadcast automation systems is anticipated. Plans include confirmation of audio file delivery for stations with Internet connectivity.
